Helix

Helix is a local-first, offline-capable Wikipedia reader and knowledge management desktop application built with Electron, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. It enables users to search, archive, and read Wikipedia articles across five languages — English, Arabic, French, Spanish, and German — with a federated search system that streams live results as you type. Once archived, articles are stored locally in plain JSON, making the entire library accessible offline without relying on any cloud service. Helix goes far beyond simple reading: it features a powerful tagging and bookshelf system for organising articles, a read-later queue for deferred reading, and advanced filters that let users sort their library by language, date range, and custom tags. For discovery, the app includes a random article generator, an "On This Day" historical events feed, a bulk category downloader that can fetch entire Wikipedia categories, and a Wiki Wanderer feature that uses AI to craft guided reading paths through interconnected articles. The built-in AI chat companion allows users to discuss article content, generate summaries, create flashcards, build quizzes, and extract timelines — all powered by on-device AI providers with encrypted API keys stored via the system's Safe Storage. A knowledge graph visualises the relationships between articles based on shared tags, bookshelves, and Wikipedia links. For focused reading, Helix offers a zen mode overlay, a floating Pomodoro timer with live preview, and sticky notes that can be placed anywhere on screen. The annotation system supports highlights in three colours, inline notes, and bookmarks directly on article text. A command palette provides keyboard-first navigation across the entire app. The stats page tracks reading habits with a daily heatmap, time-on-page analytics, topic breakdowns, and reading streaks. Discord Rich Presence integration shares your current reading activity — including article title, thumbnail, and progress — as a live Discord status. The settings page gives full control over storage limits, download behaviour, theme (dark/light/system), five accent colours, six reading fonts, motion preferences, language, reading goals, and encrypted backup/restore. The entire interface is fully translated into five languages with right-to-left layout support for Arabic, making Helix a truly global, privacy-respecting knowledge tool.
